LIVING WITH A STAR SCIENCE MISSIONS

The LWS Objective is to perform investigations in space to understand solar variability & its effects leading to a reliable predictive capability of solar variability (i.e., space weather)

The Living With a Star approach is as follows

  • Define the particle, plasma, and field environments surrounding the Sun and Earth
  • Perform investigations on the interactions and variations of the particles, atmospheres, and fields between the Sun and the Earth
  • Identify and quantify the fundamental physical processes responsible for these variations and interactions

The LWS scope is the solar interior to the Earth's atmosphere.

LWS MISSIONS FOR NEXT SOLAR CYCLE

Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO)

  • Area immediately around the sun
  • Investigate solar variability

Geospace Missions

  • Empirically model Earth's space environment
  • Investigate the response of this environment to varying solar/solar wind input

Solar Sentinels

  • Area between the Sun and Earth
  • Investigate the effect of solar variability on the space environment
